This historic rose is said to be the 'Red Rose of Lancaster', the emblem chosen by the House of Lancaster at the time of the Wars of the Roses, and there is little doubt it is the oldest cultivated form of the Gallica Rose that we have. It is also Known as the 'Apothecary's Rose' because it was used in medicine.
